MONITOR FOLDER

Hi I need help. I am trying to transfer pictures from my Canon 40D to my computer (as I have down over 7000 times before)and now only the Monitor Folder is highlighted and it keeps asking me to specify a destination as the monitored folder and then asking me to specify preferences while the camera is plugged into computer and I keep doing this and getting a message saying the camera and computer are not communicating or whatever. Basically the computer thinks I am trying to use some wireless file transmitter....and I am not. I've spent 7 hours of my day here trying to figure out the problem and even called Best Buy and other computer genius who are stumped. Please help. I just want to transfer my photos to the computer. Just recently we had a one TB of memory installed and this is my first time trying to transfer pictures. However my daughters little Sony camera had no trouble transfering photos. I am so stumped. Thanks. ...
